Established in 1960, Richard Bland College is a small, public junior college located in rural Petersburg, Virginia. As a branch of the College of William and Mary, and nationally well regarded and high ranked public institution, Richard Bland College is the state of Virginia’s only public junior college. Benefits as such include not only joint programs and affiliations, but access to the Virtual Library of Virginia. From Richard Bland College students are encouraged to transfer into a 4-year program in one of Virginia’s many schools, including more than 10 top institutions with credit transfer agreements including of course William and Mary, James Madison 911³Ô¹ÏÍø, and Virginia Tech. Students at Richard Bland College may study towards Associate in Arts, and Associate in Science degrees. Program focuses are broad, and may range from the arts, humanities or social sciences, to theater, theology, foreign languages, agricultures, chemistry, human ecology, legal assistant, recreation and park managements, sports medicine, urban and regional planning, genetics and a host of other fine final and transfer degrees.
Overseeing a network of 23 community colleges in the state of Virginia which offer a variety of 2-year degrees and other certification and specialty training programs is the Virginia Community College System. Central Virginia Community College as part of the Virginia Community College System was founded in 1966. This public 2-year institution is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, and enrolls just under 5,000 students. Counties served by Central Virginia Community College include Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell, and the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford, Virginia. Part of the extensive Virginia Community College system, Danville Community College, located in Danville, Virginia is a two-year junior college offering an extensive range of programs of study. Home to a successful baseball team, the Danville Knights also field men’s and women’s basketball and soccer teams. Students at Danville enjoy a wide array of extracurricular activities, clubs and organizations like the Graphics Club, Knights Cheerleaders, the Honors Program, the College Entrepreneurs’ Organization and many more. Established in 1972, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College is a public community college located in Richmond, Virginia. With three major campuses, the Downtown Campus, the Parham Road Campus, and the Western Campus, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College is one of the largest schools in the Virginia Community College System, and also offers virtual study through online courses. With more than 30 two-year technical degree and occupational programs, as well as a wealth of certificate, college transfer, and career studies certificate programs, there are a wide variety of options for student academics at J. Sargeant Reynolds. There are six main academic divisions at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; the School of Business; the School of Culinary Arts, Tourism and Hospitality; the School of Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies; the School of Mathematics and Science; and the School of Nursing and Allied Health. Patrick Henry Community College, founded in 1962, is located in Martinsville, Virginia. This 2-year community college offers 30 Associate Degree programs, 11 Certificate Programs, and 50 Career Studies Certificate programs. Degrees offered include an Associate in Applied Science and an Associate in Arts and Sciences, along with a variety of Certificates, Career Study Certificates, and Non-Credit Programs.
