Known as the ‘Grand Canyon State,’ Arizona is a southwest state with a little bit of everything. From city excitement in its largest city, Phoenix, to rural peace on one of the many Native American Reserves or in Indian Communities, there is a place in Arizona for all walks of life. The 48th US state, Arizona is home to nearly 6 million people today. Tourists, students and locals alike enjoy the vast, magnificent landscapes from the breathtaking mountain ranges, to the lakes and valleys, canyons, pine forests and deserts that traverse the state. With hot summers and mild winters, the weather’s always pleasant. Depending on where one is in Arizona, it’s just a stone’s throw away from border states like New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California, and Colorado, and even the country of Mexico.



Diné College, known as “The Higher Education Institution of the Navajo,” was established in 1968. This tribal 2-year community college enrolls about 2,000 students, or ‘Warriors,’ and is located in Tsaile, Arizona. The school serves the Navajo Indian Reservation which stretches into the states of not only Arizona, but New Mexico and Utah. There are seven satellite campuses of the main Tsaile campus including Chinle, Ganado, Window Rock, Tuba City, Kayenta, Crownpoint and Shiprock. Serving the people of the Navajo Indian Reservation, the name Diné itself means “the people.” Students at Diné study towards Associate of Art, Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science degrees in areas like Diné Studies, Navajo Language, Socio-Cultural public Health, and more traditional majors like Business Administration, Early Childhood Education, Environmental Sciences, and Computer Science. About a quarter of Diné students at any given time are working towards 4 year degree transfer programs. While pursuing academics at Diné students are assisted by campus organizations like the Center for Diné Studies, the Uranium Education Program, and the Institute for Integrated Rural Development.

Established in 1888, Eastern Arizona College is a rural community college located in Thatcher, Arizona with satellite campuses in Gila County and Greenlee County. Eastern Arizona College is set apart from other Arizona 2-year schools by its distinction as the oldest established community college in the state, and as the only community college in Arizona that fields a marching band. It has also been noticed for its unusual mascot, a purple and gold Gila Monster named ‘Gila Hank.’ Originally established by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, today the school is owned by the state of Arizona and bears no religious affiliation. Nestled into the picturesque Arizona scenery of the Upper Gila River Valley, the campus boasts perfect views of both Mt. Graham and the Gila River. Students at Eastern Arizona College may choose from one or more of nine academic divisions in which to concentrate their studies, including Business, Communicative Arts, Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education, Industrial Technology Education, Liberal Studies, Mathematics, Science and Allied Health and Social Studies. Degrees earned at Eastern Arizona College include Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science titles in a variety of exciting areas including the Administration of Justice, Automtovie Service Technology, Computer Assisted Design and Drafting, Diesel Technician, Cosmetology, Pre-Medical Science, Pre-Engineering, and Sports Medicine and Rehabilitative Therapies.

One of the largest community colleges in the country, the Maricopa County Community College District is composed of ten separate campuses in and around the greater Phoenix, Arizona area. Students from all campuses are assisted by resources like the Maricopa Skill Center and the SouthWest Skill Center. Study options through various Maricopa County Community College campuses include 911³Ô¹ÏÍø Transfer Programs, Developmental Education, General Education, Workforce Development, Continuing and Community Education, Student Development Services, Civic Responsibility, and Global Engagement. The Phoenix College, established in 1920 is considered the flagship campus of the system of Maricopa community colleges, and is home to a population of more than 10,000 students and nearly 1,000 faculty members. At the Midtown Phoenix campus or Downtown Phoenix campus, students are able to choose from more than 200 Associate Degree and Certificate granting programs of study. Professional training programs are also offered at Phoenix College. At Phoenix College students also have the opportunity to compete in intercollegiate athletics in 14 different NJCAA Division II men’s and women’s sports. The Phoenix College gold and blue Gears field successful teams in women’s softball and cross-country, and men’s track and field, wresting, golf, and football.

Located in Scottsdale, Arizona, a rural suburb of Phoenix, the Scottsdale Community College enrolls a student body of more than 10,000 students. This two-year school is located on land which pertains to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and has taken out a lease to remain on this land until 2069. As such, it is a member school of one of the largest community college systems in the world, the Maricopa County Community College district. The green and gold “Fighting Artichokes” are represented by “Artie the Artichoke,” often named amongst the South’s strangest mascots. Enrolling both credit and non-credit seeking students, Scottsdale Community College shares a campus with Northern Arizona 911³Ô¹ÏÍø, which allows students to transfer into 4 year Bachelor Degree programs like Elementary Education, Hotel & Restaurant Management, Interior Design, Interdisciplinary Studies, and more. At Scottsdale Community College students may work towards Associate in Arts, Associate in Business, Associate in Science, Associate in Transfer, Associate in General Studies, and Associate in Applied Science degrees, as well as Certificates of Completion, and Occupational Career Programs. Specialized programs include Occupational Programs like Tribal Development Architectural Technology, Administration of Justice Studies American Indian Studies, Equine Science, Fire Science, Forensic Science, Television Music Business, and Yoga Instruction. Scottsdale Community College is also currently making waves in local and national media for offering the very first accredited DJ and “Turn-Tableism” classes in the music department.
