Walters State College, founded in 1970, bills itself as 鈥淭he Great Smokey Mountains Community College".

Walters State offers more than 70 different programs of study. Majors include African-American Studies, Criminal Justice, Mass Communications, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Physical Therapy, Secondary Education, and Women鈥檚 Studies.

The college also has dozens of Technical Education Programs, including Computer Networking, Early Childhood Education, Fire Protection, Greenhouse Management, Industrial Maintenance, Medical Transcription, Paralegal Studies, Quality Control Technology, and Workforce Preparedness.

Walters State has articulation agreements with Carson-Newman College, East Tennessee State 911吃瓜网, Lincoln Memorial 911吃瓜网, 911吃瓜网 of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tennessee Technological 911吃瓜网, Tusculum, and Strayer 911吃瓜网. An Articulation Agreement is a contract between a community college and university that the student signs during their first year in school. Walters State also has Direct Transfer Agreements with Carson-Newman College, Cumberland College, King College, Mars Hill College, East Tennessee State 911吃瓜网, Lincoln Memorial 911吃瓜网, 911吃瓜网 of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tennessee Technological 911吃瓜网, and Tusculum.

Admissions

Walters State maintains an open admissions policy. Any student who possesses a high school diploma or GED-equivalent is welcome to enroll. Students over 21 who do not have a high school diploma or GED may be admitted as a special student, and may take developmental studies courses until they reach 24 credit hours. After that, the student is required to have a high school diploma or GED.

Applicants should submit transcripts and ACT or SAT scores. Walters State has no minimum score requirement, although administration officials use the results to determine the proper placement for the applicant.

Students wishing to transfer from another college to Walters State should provide their college transcripts, in addition to high school records and ACT or SAT scores.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available for students interested in attending Walters State.

Many types of government aid can be used by Walters State students, including the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study Program, and the Tennessee Student Assistance Award. Students should begin the application process by filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, which can be done online.

The deadline to apply for the Tennessee Student Assistance Award is May 1, although students are encouraged to submit their application as early as March.

A number of scholarships are also available to Walters State applicants, thanks to the Walters State Community College Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee. These include academic scholarships for those high school students with a minimum 2.9 grade point average and ACT score of 19. To remain eligible for financial aid, students must be full-time students who maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and work a minimum 75 hours on campus per semester.

Students who are Tennessee residents and the dependents of U.S. military personnel may be eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship Program. Financial aid counselors are on campus to answer students鈥� questions about this scholarship or any other financial aid-related questions.

Students

A number of organizations have a presence on the various Walters State campuses. Among these are the Art Club, Astronomy Club, Drama Club, Ecology Club, International Club, Music Club, Psychology Club, Respiratory Club, Senators Pages, Student Government Association, Word Up Club, and Walters State Folk, the college鈥檚 folklore club. There are also chapters of Kappa Beta Delta and Phi Theta Kappa at Walters State.
