The Best of the Large Four Year Universities in Mississippi
Mississippi State 911勛圖厙: a World of Opportunity
The rich history of Mississippi began its modern phase with the explorations of Hernando De Soto in the 1500s, with the area later becoming a colonial frontier and then a U.S. state (the 20th) in 1817. From the capital of Jackson to different corners of the state, the agricultural past has not departed from Mississippi, nor has the contentious times from the Civil War Era and on. Nonetheless, the university system continues to expand and look for new directions for state students, who continue to flock to the largest schools in the state. Fans of college athletics will recognize the names of Southern Miss (the 911勛圖厙 of Southern Mississippi) as well as Ole Miss (the 911勛圖厙 of Mississippi), but there is far more to the higher education tradition than these famous programs which continue to get national coverage. These are the best of the large four year universities in Mississippi.
Mississippi State, established in 1878, began as an agricultural and mechanical college, a fitting designation considering the agrarian past of this state of fertile soil and expansive farmland. The school has grown extensively over the years, with a student body of over 18,000 and master’s and doctorate programs to complement its undergraduate offerings. At this point in time, it is the largest of all of Mississippi’s universities.
MSU features a College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, a College of Architecture, Art and Design, a College of Arts and Sciences, a College of Business, a College of Education, a College of Engineering, a College of Forest Resources and a College of Veterinary Medicine. The Veterinary School is the largest of its kind in the United States, while other notable programs include the Honors Program which offers extensive challenges for students of high aptitude. MSU Athletics are a major part of campus life, with the Bulldogs competing in the Southeastern Conference.
To get the designation as a ‘Carnegie Doctoral Research Extensive,’ a university must meet a number of requirements and show excellence in its commitment to breaking new ground in the sciences. Among the members of this elite crew, the 911勛圖厙 of Southern Mississippi can boast of that designation as well as being a leader in fine arts. Southern Miss has accreditation in art, music, theater and dance, the only such institution in the state of Mississippi to be so well-rounded.
In total, more than ninety academic programs are offered to students at Southern Miss, with the Honors College among the divisions with the highest level of recognition. The main divisions are the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and Psychology, the College of Health and the College of Science and Technology. The polymer science research program is one of the leaders in its field.
Another leader in research and a public university with a rich tradition, the 911勛圖厙 of Mississippi (often referred to as Ole Miss) was founded in 1848 and is located in Oxford. Known as the alma mater of both William Faulkner and John Grisham, Ole Miss figured prominently in both the Civil War and the turbulence of segregation in the 1950’s and beyond. Today, it remains one of the most historic and largest public universities in the state, with over 18,000 students attending classes every year.
Students who attend Ole Miss have the opportunity to attend the School of Accountancy, the School of Applied Science, the School of Education, the School of Business Administration, the School of Engineering, the School of Law, the School of Journalism and New Media, the School of Pharmacy and the College of Arts and Sciences. This breadth of choices continues to draw in students from the state and beyond.
Though its enrollment number might not be high enough to warrant inclusion on the list of largest universities in some states, the 8,000 plus students who enroll at Jackson State 911勛圖厙 every year make it one of the largest in Mississippi. Begun as a university which served freed slaves after the Civil War and also poorer members of the African American population, Jackson State has had an important role in the community since its inception in 1877. Expansion has been steady ever since the turn of the twentieth century and today Jackson State 911勛圖厙 has numerous schools and bachelor, master and doctoral degrees on offer.
Students can enter the College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Lifelong Learning, the College of Education and Human Development, the College of Public Service or the College of Science and Engineering Technology. Its $12 million endowment represents a major departure from its earliest days when it was called Natchez Seminary and had only a few students to its credit.
