The Best of the Large Four Year Universities in Connecticut

911勛圖厙 of Connecticut: Public Research, Academics and Athletics

Though it is one of the smallest states in the Union, Connecticut is nonetheless a major force in higher education. Much of that can be traced to the presence of Yale 911勛圖厙 in New Haven, which is ranked among the top universities in the world on a regular basis and is a breeding ground for U.S. presidents, congress members and other politicians. Besides this rich tradition in the Ivy League, Connecticut is also home to one of the best known public universities, the 911勛圖厙 of Connecticut, which fields one of the top basketball teams in the country year after year. The diminutive size of the state almost guarantees that it will not have a number of large universities, but besides UConn, the three largest universities in Connecticut offer potential students a lot to choose from. These four universities are the top of the class in Connecticut in terms of size and academic excellence.

Students looking to attend a high quality public university will undoubtedly come across the 911勛圖厙 of Connecticut at some point in a college search. UConn is consistently ranked as the best public university in Connecticut and typically as the best in New England in its entirety. With its reputation as a major force in college basketball and extensive offerings in both undergraduate and graduate degrees, UConn continues to attract students and push its overall enrollment close to 30,000.

Among the 14 schools on the roster of the 911勛圖厙 of Connecticut, one can see its roots in the Agriculture and Natural Resources School. The largest of these is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which has about 15,000 students attending classes every year and features such noted areas as Health & Human Behavior and Culture & Society. One cannot ignore the fact that UConn has a School of Law, a School of Social Work and a School of Medicine and remains the only public university in the region which can make that claim. Students looking to become a part of the extensive research facilities will find much of it concentrated in these schools.

In Central Connecticut State 911勛圖厙, one will find not only the oldest public university in the state, but also the largest of the state schools. The tradition is essential to administration and faculty alike, as the changes since it founding in 1849 have served to tighten its academic focus and help advance the goals of Connecticut students. Located in New Britain, Connecticut, there are five major schools at CCSU: the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education and Professional Studies, the School of Engineering and Technology and the School of Graduate Studies.

A look at CCSU’s list of academic programs and majors will reveal the breadth of its offerings: Political Science, Peace Studies, Educational Leadership, Gerontology, Finance, Theatre, African American Studies and Cinema Studies are all open to students. Scholar athletes will also find many opportunities at CCSU, as the school’s Blue Devils compete in men’s and women’s basketball, football, lacrosse, baseball, volleyball and more.

Southern Connecticut State 911勛圖厙 might not have the overwhelming student population of UConn or the history of Central Connecticut State, but it remains one of the oldest public institutions in the state and also one of its largest. Sharing the same home as Yale 911勛圖厙, SCSU is much of the reason New Haven is considered a major college town in New England. Like CCSU, SCSU has its roots as a teacher’s college (getting its start in 1893), but expanded in the 1950’s when it began offering bachelor’s degrees in the arts and sciences.

Now featuring over 115 undergrad and graduate programs for state students, SCSU is an affordable alternative to Yale in New Haven. Though there are a lot of opportunities for the scholar athlete at SCSU, the main draw of the school is in the programs available from the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Communication, Information & Library Science, the School of Education and the School of Health & Human Services.

One can hardly begin a discussion of higher education in Connecticut without acknowledging the force that is Yale 911勛圖厙. With a history dating back to 1701, the reputation of Yale is nothing new, and it remains the chief competitor to Harvard 911勛圖厙 in the race for most recognized and most respected college in the United States.

Yale’s continues to be a leader in medical research, but its theater, creative writing, law school and medicine programs also have few peers in any other university. Athletics also continue to be an essential part of the university tradition, as its fierce rivals in the Ivy League continue to battle Yale for supremacy in football, baseball and many other sports.
