Kansas is located in the Midwestern United States at the geographic center of the 48 contiguous states, equidistant from the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. It generally experiences three distinct climates: cool to cold winters with hot humid summers in the east, hot to very hot summers with highly variable warm to very cold winters in the west, and hot, humid summers with milder winters and copious amounts of rainfall in the south. Precipitation and snowfall varies widely throughout the state but as a whole it’s vulnerable to strong thunderstorms that can spawn powerful tornadoes. Along with Arkansas, it has reported more F5 strength tornadoes than any other state and averages over 50 tornadoes annually. It is one of the slowest-growing states in the nation due to rural flight, which describes the general movement of people from the countryside into cities, though the metropolitan Kansas City area of Johnson County is among the fastest growing in the country. It is one of the most productive agricultural states, leading the nation in wheat, sorghum, and sunflower production, and is home to several major companies such as Sprint Nextel and several large aircraft manufacturing facilities. It is also home to a number of excellent higher education options.

Located in Baldwin City, it has a total enrollment of around 4,000 students and is one of the oldest universities in Kansas, having been founded way back in 1858. The school boasts some distinguished alumni, including four Rhodes Scholars, a Pulitzer Prize Winner, and professionals who have made an impact in their world. Its MBA program is highly lauded, being among the most popular in Kansas. Its highly selective nursing program is similarly outstanding, maintaining a partnership with Stormont-Vail Healthcare in Topeka and offering two years of study and clinical experience that leads to a Bachelor’s in Nursing. The school aims to instill a healthy dose of confidence into each student.

Affiliated with the United Methodist Church and located in Winfield, it is a four-year private school that emphasizes service learning, which has led it to be nationally recognized for its programs in leadership, discipleship and entrepreneurship. The main campus offers laptops computers to all incoming students. It also has professional studies programs for working adults whereby they can complete courses either in a traditional classroom setting or online on their way to earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree. The school maintains the tradition of letting students add to a rock to large pile of rocks called “The Mound” that has grown to be quite large thanks to past students who have done the same.

Located in Salina, the school is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and has a student body of approximately 800 students. Most of them come from Kansas and states in the nearby Midwest, with around half living on campus and almost all students receiving financial aid. It offers more than 27 major programs with an emphasis on liberal arts studies, and offers evening classes for adults who’d like to study criminal justice, business management, or nursing. It boasts a student-faculty ratio of 14 to 1, with an average class size of a mere 20 students. Because it is a member of the Associated Colleges of Central Kansas, students may enroll in courses and use the resources of 6 academic institutions in the area.

Founded back in 1865, it is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA and has a student body that consists of approximately 4000 undergraduates. It was one of the early schools to promote adult education in the country, opening its first adult campus in 1974. The main campus is referred to as “Residential College” by staff and offers over 30 student groups, organizations, and clubs, including one of the oldest student-run newspapers in Kansas. The school views the college experience as being as much an opportunity to interact with people as it is a chance to learn new skills.

Sterling College: Renowned for Its Social Entrepreneurship Program

With a student body of just around 700 students, it is a small Christ Centered liberal arts college located in Sterling. Students have the opportunity of completing portions of their bachelor’s degree online. It is renowned for its social entrepreneurship undergraduate program and for having a partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity Fellows must complete a course of study developed by the partnership, as well as a Social Entrepreneurship minor and servant-leadership development training, but have the opportunity to serve around the world.

It is Christian liberal arts institution situated approximately 45 miles north of Wichita in Hillsboro and has a student body of around 600 students. It offers an Adult and Graduate Studies degree completion program in Christian Ministry, Registered Nurse to Bachelor’s in Nursing, and Business Administration. Students are expected to participate in community service in accordance with the faith-based mission of the college and are encouraged to participate in a variety of student organizations.
