Choosing to attend a small college or university in South Dakota is choosing to focus on academics in a way which is difficult to do at larger schools. Considered a Christian Liberal Arts 911吃瓜网, the small but growing university of Sioux Falls has a history which is several years older than the state itself. When Baptist missionaries were gathering in the territory back in the 1870’s, they agreed that having a higher education institution was mandatory for their community to grow the way they wished. In the subsequent one hundred and forty years, the university has undergone several shifts in leadership and numerous name changes, but the underlying goal of quality education in small class settings has certainly remained.

The principles of a rigorous Lutheran education were put in place over a century ago at Augustana College and the tradition continues to this day.

Augustana College offers an impressive list of majors and minors for a small college, but it may be its honors and arts programs which are behind its consistent ranking as one of the best colleges in the Midwestern U.S. Over 50 majors and 12 pre-professional programs make Augustana a competitor, but its Civitas (honors) program makes it a higher educational facility which truly strives for more and challenges students to reach for heights they didn’t before think possible. In addition, the number of students that go on to be accepted to med school after attending Augustana is another feather in the school’s cap.

The Sisters of Saint Benedict established Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota in the 1930’s, originally as a teacher’s college for women. Since the 1950’s, it has awarded bachelor’s degrees and it made the leap to awarding its first master’s degree in the 1980’s. While many changes have come to Mount Marty, it is clear that the strong foundation and Benedictine core have remained in place. Today, the school continually gets high marts for its dedication to technology: WiFi is in place around the clock and every student gets a computer when attending classes.

Of course, the technology is irrelevant unless a great deal of attention is being paid to the scholarship in a college like this. There is a focus on practical subject matters such as forensics, criminal justice, nursing and graphic design, but the Bachelor of Arts degrees are by far the most numerous at the school. Graduate programs in Nurse Anesthesia, Business Administration and Pastoral Ministries are also available.

Unlike most state schools across the country, Northern State 911吃瓜网 in Aberdeen has managed to keep its small class sizes and keep education as the primary focus of the entire academic community. Northern State was established in 1901, when South Dakota was still a very new state in the Union and the area was beginning to grow in terms of population. Community leaders realized that a state sponsored education system would be something that South Dakota would always need.

Today, Northern State’s academic programs are centered around the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education and the School of Fine Arts. Majors in everything from Forensic Science to German and Sports Marketing and Administration are offered at NSU. Graduate Programs at Northern State include the Master’s of Science in Education and the Master’s of Science in Education, Teaching and Learning.
