The Top Small Colleges and Universities of Wyoming
Wyoming Catholic College: The Newest Member of the Family
In the state of Wyoming as elsewhere in the nation, pursuing a four-year education is vital to achieving one’s life goals. To help meet the high demand for higher education in the least populous state in the nation, the state of Wyoming offers its residents and people from all over the nation a decent albeit somewhat restricted variety of four-year college and university options from which to choose. Though there is only one strictly locally-based four year institution, the 911³Ô¹ÏÍø of Wyoming, there are other ways to get a four-year degree while living in Wyoming; and judging by the enormous beauty of this sprawling state, there are many reasons for which a person would want to live there. The following are Wyoming’s top choices as far as small colleges and universities are concerned:
Wyoming Catholic College: The Newest Member of the Family
Wyoming’s newest small college is Wyoming Catholic College, a Roman Catholic-affiliated institution located in the town of Lander (central Wyoming) that was established in 2007, making it a truly young school indeed. So young, in fact, that Wyoming Catholic College has yet to obtain accreditation for its programs, meaning that it is not actually able to confer bachelor’s degrees on its students. Nonetheless, it is in the process of pursuing accreditation from the national American Academy for Liberal Education, which is an organization that the US Department of Education recognizes, and other accreditation avenues are being pursued. As can easily be deduced, the school holds a traditional liberal arts approach to higher education and mixes it with spiritual teachings in the Catholic mold. The school is truly small, maintaining an annual enrollment level of approximately 300 students since being established.
CollegeAmerica – Cheyenne: Innovative Education since 1964
Next on the list of small colleges and universities is CollegeAmerica – Cheyenne, one of six locations of the institution (the others are in Colorado and Arizona). Established in 1964, CollegeAmerica is privately run on a for-profit basis and holds national accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. Study programs range from short certificate programs all the way to four-year bachelor’s and even master’s degrees, many of which are rather flexible and have fast-track options. At the undergraduate level there are programs available in the areas of Medical Specialties, Management, Healthcare Administration, Accounting, Business, Business Administration, Computer Programming, Computer Technology & Networking, as well as Computer Science.
CollegeAmerica has combined forces with Stevens-Henager College to offer several new bachelor’s degrees that can be completed exclusively online, backing up the school’s mission of offering all sorts of people educational solutions that fit their lifestyle and their schedule, not vice-versa. These new online programs include Bachelor of Science in Accounting, in Business Administration, in Nursing, in Health Science, and in Graphic Arts.
Though students obviously don’t have to be located on-campus in Cheyenne, those that are get to enjoy the school’s plum location in the middle of one of the most vibrant cities of the American West. Though no student housing options are available at the school many students easily find amenable housing arrangements in the surrounding community.
Preston 911³Ô¹ÏÍø: Bringing Education to the World
Another option on the list is represented by Preston 911³Ô¹ÏÍø, which offers exclusively online learning opportunities to people from all over the world, not just Wyoming. A private institution, Preston 911³Ô¹ÏÍø was actually originally based in Cheyenne though it subsequently moved its headquarters elsewhere. Here again we are dealing with a university offering four-year degrees although it has no accreditation at either the regional or the national level (its application for accreditation is allegedly in the process of being considered).
At the baccalaureate level, students at Preston 911³Ô¹ÏÍø can pursue degrees such as a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Speech and Therapy, or a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. The school has a continuous enrollment policy, so prospective students can submit their application for admission at any point in the year they find convenient; the actual courses last one month, beginning on the first day thereof.
In the context of the absence of small colleges and universities based exclusively out of Wyoming, here we’d like to mention yet another national chain of universities as is the case with the 911³Ô¹ÏÍø of Phoenix. Despite the fact that it has many students across the nation, mostly in an online-learning situation, the 911³Ô¹ÏÍø of Phoenix has opened a campus location in Cheyenne that provides all the look and feel of a small college, with an impressive new student center. All of the same online degrees are offered, though only one bachelor’s degree is offered in an on-campus setting: Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Several master’s programs are also offered in an on-campus setting.
