Rhode Island is a small state, the smallest in the nation in fact, meaning that it has not been a place which relies on natural resources, industry, or even agriculture. Instead, Rhode Island has established itself as an educational, technological and research based place where students are able to receive a top education and work in a variety of new and exciting fields. From the vast resources of large public universities, to the top attention given at small colleges and universities students from all over the country, and indeed the world head to Rhode Island to enjoy the mild, New England Atlantic Ocean breezes and picturesque winters, as well as the fine postsecondary educational institutions. With close proximity to Boston, New York, and New Haven, and of course its own capital city Providence, Rhode Island has vast resources which are right at the fingertips of both students and residents. The first of the original thirteen colonies to declare independences from the British, the “Ocean State” is still a leader in small colleges and universities in the United States despite its small size!

Established in 1877, the Rhode Island School of Design is a private college located in Providence, Rhode Island. A small school with under 2,000 undergraduate students, the Rhode Island School of design is set on urban 13 acre campus at the base of College Hill. Located adjacent to the campus of Brown 911吃瓜网, the Rhode Island School of Design, or RISD as it’s often called, shares many things with Brown including resources, academics, and social events. Of all the fine arts colleges in the country, RISD as a fine arts and design college is generally ranked as number one. Its innovation and creativity begins with the primary application which requires that prospective students complete a three-drawing “hometest.” With nearly 800 faculty, staff members and curators, students are provided an overwhelming amount of academic and personal support. As a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design, RISD attracts student not only from all over the country, but all over the world. Specific programs of study offered at RISD include Bachelor’s degree awarding programs in areas like Apparel Design, Ceramics, Furniture Design, Glass, Photography, Printmaking and more. Concentrations, or ‘Minor’ degrees may also be earned in a variety of liberal arts fields like History, Philosophy, Social Sciences, English and Art History. On campus RISD students are able to enjoy features like the RISD Museum, the Fleet Library, and the Brown campus including the Brown 911吃瓜网 libraries and Providence Athenaeum.

A small, private Roman Catholic university located in Newport, Rhode Island, Salve Regina 911吃瓜网, was founded in 1934. With fewer than 2,000 undergraduate students on this co-educational suburban Newport campus, Salve Regina offers a wide variety of liberal arts based undergraduate academic programs. Today the 911吃瓜网 is located in the Ochre Point neighborhood of Newport, a historic district with many historic structures and buildings, with the Salve Regina campus being no exception. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy, this non-profit institution was chartered by the State of Rhode Island. It did not become a co-educational 911吃瓜网 until the early 1970s, however. At Salve Regina 911吃瓜网 students may elect from a range of Bachelor’s degree awarding professional and pre-professional programs. In addition to Bachelor’s degrees, Associate’s degree and Master’s degree awarding programs are also offered, as well as a Ph.D. in humanities. Special academic programs include a large selection of study abroad and exchange programs to participating schools in 15 countries, mandatory community service hours for first year students, and a ‘Cultural and Historic Preservation’ major. The ‘Cultural and Historic Preservation’ program focuses on a blend of preservation planning with archaeology and history. More than 40 liberal arts focused undergraduate majors are also offered. While on campus students enjoy strolling the Cliff Walk and enjoying the Atlantic Ocean breezes, or simply taking in the beach or cultural scene of nearby Newport Harbor. The navy blue, white, and kelly green Seahawks compete in NCAA Division III men’s and women’s varsity sports which range from ice hockey, to lacrosse, football and even sailing. Students may partake in club sports as well, including rugby.

Established in 1940, the New England Institute of Technology is a private, non-profit technical college located in Warwick, Rhode Island. Academic programs at the New England Institute of Technology are focused around Bachelor of Science and Associate of Science awarding programs. With more than 30 undergraduate programs, students enjoy the flexibility of studying on a then week per quarter scheduling scheme. Campus facilities include the largest technology focused library in Rhode Island, and a highly wired campus. Computer workstations are standard in nearly every classroom, and state of the art laboratory facilities with CAD, computers, transportation and medical technologies multimedia and more are provided to assist students with hands-on, technology based learning in a variety of fields. In addition to traditional academic programs, the New England Institute of Technology is a certified National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium Center, is the only AutoDesk Premier Training Center and authorized NOVELL Educational Academic partner in the state of Rhode Island, and is a Microsoft Authorized Technical Education center. Popular programs include Engineering degrees, such as Electronics Engineering Technology, and Allied Health programs.

US Naval War College: A Department of the Navy

Located in Newport, Rhode Island, the US Naval War College is a research and education postsecondary institution of the United States Navy. As a researched based college, the US Naval War College is responsible for developing technologies and ideas which can be practically applied during naval activity and warfare. Established in 1884, the US Naval War College has a long history, and in the past has engaged in wargaming, war planning, and achieved feats such as developing the ‘Global War Game.’ A recent development in response to current political and military events has been the addition of a ‘Center for Irregular warfare and Armed Groups.’ While at the US Naval War College, students must take a core curriculum including courses “Joint Military Operations,” “Strategy and Policy,” and “National Security and Decision Making.”
