Montana may be blessed with some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the country, but it is also home to one of the most well-run community college systems. From Blackfeet Community College serving the community of Browning to Dawson CC by the Yellowstone River, Montana two-year colleges allow students the opportunity to get a jump on their education at a very affordable price. While the traditional programs will all be found here, numerous programs unique to the community are also offered, from Tribal Advocate programs at Blackfeet CC to the Culinary Arts program at Flathead Valley. Nearly all students at Blackfeet Community College live, work and attend school on the reservation, as they are members of the Blackfeet community in Browning, Montana. It became apparent in the 1970’s that a school devoted to training local students for the professional world would be an important step for the community and the Tribal Council eventually voted to make the Blackfeet Community College a reality. Its role as a key nonprofit educational institution in the community continues to be a source of pride.
Academically, students can pursue the Associate of the Arts, the Associate of Science, the Associate of Applied Science or different Certificate programs. Education, Human Resources, Business Management and Liberal Arts are all options for AA candidates, while AS degrees in Computer Science, Environmental Science, Forestry, and different Allied Health programs also await students. Examples of AAS offering at Blackfeet Community College include Natural Resources Management, Hospitality Operations Management, Construction Technology, and Office Administration. Certificate programs include Gerontology, Coaching, Tribal Advocate, Building Trade and Applied Computer Technology.
Small town Montana could not be much more picturesque than the setting of Kalispell, where Flathead Valley Community College has been serving students in a vast section of the state which spans two counties. Many students will head to Flathead with the intention of receiving a two-year associate degree, as the AA, AS and AAS degrees continue to be popular. In addition, transfer programs are available in Agribusiness Management, Geology, Economics, Theatre Arts Studies, Physics, Psychology, English and many other subjects for students who are pursuing a four-year degree.
Flathead Valley Community College is not just limited to the arts and sciences programs, as it has a number of technical and career subjects available to local students. The stunning setting of the campus, sprawling over 200 acres of land, is the perfect place to learn and try out new ideas, while online and distance learning are other possibilities. The Culinary Arts program at FVCC is quickly becoming one of the most popular, due to the excellent resources at the disposal of students.
One of the oldest community colleges in Montana, Miles Community College was established in 1939 in Miles City and continues to serve the community by granting AA, AS and AAS degrees while maintaining a transfer program with other local colleges. Since it has been in operation for so long, the list of programs at MCC remains one of the most extensive among Montana community colleges. Programs include Automotive Technology, Building Technology, Equine Studies, Heavy Equipment Operations, Business and Education.
One of the most unique courses of study at Miles Community College is the Associate of Science with Biofuels Emphasis: feedstock production, procuring, co-product marketing and usage all come under the program’s microscope. Other notable programs are the Agribusiness and Agriculture major, the Equine Studies program and of course the Allied Health program. Numerous certificates are also available in subjects ranging from Customer Relations and Heavy Equipment Operations to Entrepreneurship and Accounting.
Students looking at the options open to them at Dawson Community College will find what is typically part of a university package: athletics, a strong support staff and terrific facilities all await. Located in Glendive in Eastern Montana, DCC makes it easy to focus on an education with a terrific student to teacher ratio of 11:1 and numerous options in vocational and degree programs. In total, students will have 28 transfer degree options (with either an AA or AS included), 13 AAS degrees and 9 certificates in specific careers.
The AAS roster is as impressive as any in the state: Agribusiness Technology, Music Technology, Early Childhood Education, Criminal Justice and Business Management are among the programs available. The Dawson Community College student can also take part in the athletics programs which many educators find as the perfect compliment to a load of college courses: basketball, softball, baseball, rodeo, golf and volleyball are all being offered here.
