Utah's Most Impressive Large Four-Year Universities
Brigham Young: The Country’s Foremost Religious 911³Ô¹ÏÍø
Residents of the great state of Utah have always recognized the importance of being well-educated, which is why so many of the state’s large four year universities were founded before the territory even entered into statehood. There are so many great public and private universities and colleges across the state of Utah, that it’s clear that residents understand that these institutions offer students a path to success in life. Education is so important to Utahns that they created the Utah System of Higher Education in the late 1960s to improve upon the state’s universities. Utah has many unique large four year universities that have produced some of the nation’s most prominent athletes, religious leaders, CEOs, politicians, writers, engineers, researchers and scientists. Enrollment continues to climb at every university across the state as voters, politicians and students push for higher rates of education.
Named after one of the early leaders in the Church of Latter Day Saints, Brigham Young 911³Ô¹ÏÍø continues to be owned by the church today. With around 30,000 undergraduate students, BYU is the biggest religious school in America. BYU offers classes in over 60 different languages and impressively, over 75% of graduating seniors have obtained proficiency in a foreign language. The university offers undergraduates degrees in nearly 200 different fields, but its religion, international studies, engineering, and computer science departments are particularly strong. Brigham Young has produced numerous notable graduates but Ken Jennings, Mitt Romney, and Stephenie Meyer are just a few of the successful alumnae.
As the oldest higher education institution in the state, the 911³Ô¹ÏÍø of Utah is still a strong education leader and great research university. U of U is well-regarded for it’s architecture, medicine, engineering, computer science, earth sciences, chemistry, and agricultural sciences programs, but with over 100 undergraduate majors, there is something for everyone. Karl Rove (former White House Deputy Chief of Staff/Senior Adviser the the President), Nolan Bushnell (inventor of Atari and Chuck. E. Cheese), Ed Catmull (co-creator of Pixar), and J. Willard Marriott (founder of the Marriott hotel chain) are just a few of the 911³Ô¹ÏÍø of Utah’s famous alumnae. The 911³Ô¹ÏÍø of Utah has also produced several professional athletes, and the Ute varsity men’s and women’s athletic programs are some of the best in the nation. U of U’s location in Salt Lake City, enables students to take advantage of great opportunities off campus in the city that is the state’s political and economic capitol.
Located over 500 pristine acres of green space, Utah State 911³Ô¹ÏÍø is arguably one of the most beautiful university campuses in the country. Even though more than 22,000 undergraduates are enrolled at USU, more than 14,000 of them choose to live on the campus or on its borders every semester. Utah State is well known for the high-level of research that both undergraduates and professors carry out on campus, and as a result, the school’s Space Dynamics Laboratory has strong ties with NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense. USU has the best-funded aerospace research program and consistently wins competitions for aerospace engineering projects. Additionally, the school has excellent prehealth, natural sciences, and American history programs, but undergraduates can choose from nearly 200 different fields to study within. The campus is idyllically located in the town of Logan, which sits in Northern beside the Great Salt Lake and the Cache National Forrest.
Utah Valley 911³Ô¹ÏÍø offers students with a unique learning opportunity called “engaged learning,” which enables students to combine practice with pedagogy. Instead of simply absorbing lectures in the classroom, students also become engaged with the work on a practical level with organizations and businesses in the area. As a relatively new school that was only founded in 1941, UVU has rapidly grown in recent years to an undergraduate student population of 27,000. Utah Valley offers 58 different bachelors degrees, but business and media programs are especially strong. Additionally, students enrolled at the school can also take several unique programs related to the 911³Ô¹ÏÍø’s trade and technical schools. UVU helped launch the careers of many famous athletes and dancers as well.
Weber State 911³Ô¹ÏÍø offers undergraduates 215 different bachelor degree programs, which makes it the most diverse and biggest undergraduate program in the state. Each year, 24,000 students fill the campus, but class sizes remain small. Teacher to student ratios remain high, and professors focus on teaching rather than on research, so undergraduates receive more attention than they would at similar campuses in the state. Not surprisingly, Weber State is recognized for having an excellent education department and teacher training program. Located in Ogden, WSU is perfectly situated with Salt Lake City nearby to the South, with Cache National Forrest to the East, and the Great Salt Lake to the West.
