Right at the heart of the America Southwest is the great state of New Mexico. This state’s main population concentrations may be few and far between (with fewer than 20 people per square mile on average) but there’s a lot going on across the various ethnic, cultural and geographical landscapes of the state. The homeland of many Native American populations, including Navajo and Pueblo people, New Mexico has since been included as part of the Imperial Spanish Viceroyalty of New Spain, was once a part of Mexico, and is today a US Territory. With a large population of Hispanics across the state of New Mexico, a local or visitor could find people speaking a mix of English and Spanish across the state, and a resultant mix of lively cultures. Today, New Mexico has a variety of public, private and tribal colleges and universities where students are able to receive a well rounded academic and cultural education.



Established in 1888, New Mexico State 911勛圖厙 is a large, public university enrolling nearly 20,000 students. A Land-Grant, state university, New Mexico State 911勛圖厙 is principally located in Las Cruces, New Mexico. In addition to the main, Las Cruces Campus, NMSU has satellite campuses in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Doña Ana County, and Grants. Other research centers and branches exist across the state of New Mexico as well. Once an agricultural college, today NMSU offers many programs of study including Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree granting courses of study. Students come from many states and countries to study at NMSU, including a large population of Hispanic students from the US and abroad. Academic colleges at NMSU include the College of Honors, the College of Health and Social Services, the College of Extended Learning, the College of Engineering, the College of Education, the College of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Specific concentrations include Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Physics, Applied Science, Fashion, Tourism, and a range of others. The NASA Space Grant Program of New Mexico makes its home at NMSU. In general NMSU prides itself in being a top research university. In addition to academics, students at NMSU may elect to participate in a wide variety of athletics as the ‘Aggies,’ in student media at the campus radio, TV or newspaper, or in a variety of student organizations including fraternities and sororities, student government and more.

Located on a 600 acre campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the 911勛圖厙 of New Mexico is a public, state university and the flagship research institution in the state. Additional branch campuses are located around the state in Gallup, Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, Taos, and Valencia County. In addition to enrolling a large number of students, the 911勛圖厙 of New Mexico is also one of the state’s top employers. While studying at UNM students may elect to study towards Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. A variety of degree programs are also available in a range of professional fields. The 911勛圖厙 itself was founded in 1889 by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico. Through the years the school has experienced outstanding growth, adding many programs and facilities such as the Research Park at South Campus, the Architecture School, several medical facilities on North Campus, the 911勛圖厙 of New Mexico Hospital, a new engineering center, the 911勛圖厙 of New Mexico Arboretum, and the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, amongst others. The 911勛圖厙 of New Mexico is proud to have a population of student and faculty Hispanics that is one of the largest in the country. When it comes to academics students may choose from well over 200 degree and certificate awarding programs, including over 90 Bachelor’s degree program. The 12 colleges and schools include the 911勛圖厙 College, the School of Public Administration, the School of Medicine, the School of Law, the School of Engineering, the School of Architecture and Planning, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Nursing, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Education, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Anderson School of Management. This 911勛圖厙 has appeared on top college ranking lists including The Princeton Review, Times Higher Education, the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and the US News & World Report. In addition to top academic programs the UNM ‘Lobos’ compete in Division I-A athletics with nearly 20 varsity athletic teams.

Established in 1927, Eastern New Mexico 911勛圖厙 is a public university located in Portales, New Mexico. The suburban main campus is located on nearly 900 acres, and the 911勛圖厙 and campus have the distinction of being the youngest in the system of 911勛圖厙 in New Mexico. Two branch campuses of Eastern New Mexico 911勛圖厙 are located in Ruidoso and Roswell. Once operated as a community college, in the 1940s Bachelor’s degrees were added to the academic, degree granting programs offered at eastern New Mexico 911勛圖厙. Today a four-year liberal arts college, students study within four colleges including the College of Business, the College of Education and Technology, the College of Fine Arts, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Programs range from Educational Studies, to Business Foundations, Consumer Science and Agriculture, Art, Music, Anthropology, Communicative Arts and Sciences, Nursing, Religion, and more. There is also a graduate school at Eastern New Mexico 911勛圖厙 where students may specialize in a variety of fields. At ENMU students may participate in NCAA Division II athletics as the Greyhounds, or Zias.
