New Mexico is known for it’s arid landscape and Native American traditions above all. With tribes of mostly Navajo and Pueblo peoples, New Mexico boasts a unique cultural dynamic- mixing Hispanic, Mexican and Native American influences. This rich mix of Native cultures is evident in all aspects of New Mexican culture. From the politics to the art and even throughout the different institutes of higher education, Native American traditions and history resonate strong. Among the epicenters of these cultural and artistic movements lies a large artistic community in Santa Fe as well as Taos. These places blend a history of the land with a strong connection to Native American traditions.

Central New Mexico Community College is considered a post-secondary institute, offering courses in more than one hundred fields of study. Whether students are looking to receive associate’s degrees in the arts, sciences or another occupational discipline, CNM is committed to putting students on the right track to success. New Mexico has experienced a spike in growth in recent years, making it one of the few states with more economic opportunities than others. At CNM, awareness of the needs in professional fields around New Mexico is paramount, allowing them to cater their programs to meet the job market within the community. Hence, 95% of students receiving degrees from CNM are placed in jobs related to their field of study. In addition to the highly focused degree programs offered at CNM, many learning opportunities are available to students that may not necessarily be in their specific field of study. Taking yoga classes or beginning Spanish courses doesn’t have to align with one’s degree per se, yet provides great opportunities for students to expand their horizons at CNM.

At first Clovis Community College only offered evening classes at a local high school back in 1961. By 1970, however, voters approved a tax, which allowed state-sponsored assistance to the community college. By 1980, a new campus had been built and the school expanded to include a number of new vocational studies. Focusing on student needs has allowed Clovis Community College to provide accessible, affordable, accredited, and high-quality educational experiences for people of all ages. In addition to providing opportunities that enable students to receive associates degrees and certificates, CCC also courses that meet industry-sanctioned credentials. Placing students in jobs that meet their specific skill set is a priority at Clovis Community College. Hence, Clovis is committed to providing industry specific training to students that supports individual development in a learner-centered environment.

For over 150 years, College of Santa Fe has been providing programs that balance practical experience with essential theory, giving students the ability to empower their own visions through a well-rounded understanding of their professional goals. The arts and sciences are key points of focus at the College of Santa Fe. Centrally located in the city of Santa Fe, the college puts students in the middle of a vibrant artistic community, encouraging them to find their own creative drive to succeed. Combined with knowledgeable staff members and personalized courses, students are able to develop an individual voice within a unique college setting. The College, although grounded in the liberal arts, has distinguished itself in the creative arts as well. Among the unique characteristics of CSF is that they are host to the only professional soundstages on a college campus in the United States. Additionally, The College of Santa Fe is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission.

Deeply committed to the local community by its association with community agencies, businesses, industries, and other groups, San Juan College has the mission of improving the quality of life of the citizens that it sets out to serve. In the way of creating a comprehensive community college that tackles the mission it has set itself up for, San Juan College promises to remove access barriers, and develops an appropriate curriculum, complete with services that meet student needs. A national Indian community college that is also a Land Grant Institution, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute partners with tribes and employers that have a stake in Native American Education. By focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, SIPI will have a preeminent position as an institute of higher learning by the year 2020. Understanding the plural and globally minded culture in which we live, SIPI seeks to educate Native American students to become responsible and aware members of society.
