Located in the southeastern United States, Tennessee is tied with Missouri for having borders with the most states, with that number standing at 8. Located in Jefferson City and consisting of approximately 2000 students, Carson-Newman is a historically Baptist liberal arts college that offers a wide variety of majors to choose from. Its nursing and pre-medicine programs are highly lauded and they often place their graduates in some of the top medical programs in the nation. The school as a whole often places near the top 100 nationally, according to many reputable publications.
Consisting of over 4000 undergraduates, it’s the second largest private university in Tennessee and the largest private Christian university in the state. Located in Nashville, Vanderbilt is a private research university with almost 7000 undergraduates enrolled. It’s often ranked among the top 50 universities in the world and among the top 20 in the nation according to many reputable publications. Despite being situated in the heart of Nashville just a couple of miles from the downtown area, it boasts a beautiful campus with a natural setting that features over 300 species of shrubs and trees. It is among the most selective of universities, with an acceptance rate of around 20%. It gives students the choice of over 70 different majors and even lets them create their own if they’d like. There are over 400 student organizations that undergraduates can choose to be a part of, as well as over 30 service-oriented organizations where students can end up helping out communities around the nation and even around the world. The university boasts past alumni that include Vice Presidents, Pulitzer Prize winners, Academy Award recipients and 7 Nobel Prize laureates.
Located in Jackson, Union is considered to be one of the best schools in the southern United States, often ranking among the top 20 for schools in the region. It is also noted for having a high percentage of classes with less than 20 students, having excellent student to faculty ratios and having a high percentage of students amongst their undergraduates that placed in the top 25 percent of their high school graduating class. It is widely recognized as offering high quality education at a great value. Many famous American political figures including past Presidents have made guest appearances at the school’s Annual Scholarship Banquet.
Consisting of only around 1600 undergraduates, this liberal arts college located in Memphis is often considered to be one of America’s top colleges, frequently making the top 100 according to many publications. Many graduates go on to professional or graduate school after completion of their studies. The school does a good job of preparing them in that regard because its graduates boast an acceptance rate to medical school that is twice the national average rate. The school is often applauded for its community outreach participation, with almost 80% of the student body participating in some sort of community service by the time they graduate. The school is also renowned for the honor code that its student are expected to abide by, but once in place, students can enjoy a remarkable level of trust. For example, teachers can trust their students enough to give them closed book take-home exams and know that they will not cheat.
Located close to Knoxville in Maryville and consisting of around 1100 students, it is one of the oldest schools in the south and in the nation as a whole. The school requires that students take a wide range of general education courses throughout their undergraduate career so that they will become well-rounded graduates, well-versed in a wide array of fields. It’s one of the few universities that makes students take a comprehensive test related to their major before they graduate, as well as complete a senior thesis. Because of this, it is widely considered to offer one of the best comprehensive bachelor degree programs in the nation.
