Located in the northeastern Great Lakes region of the United States, Indiana enjoys cool winters and warm summers, with rainfall spread throughout the year. It also happens to be prone to experience tornado activity and is considered to be one of the most vulnerable states in the nation in that respect. Putting that aside, Indiana is a leading producer of steal in the United States and excels in the manufacturing of automobiles, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, factory machinery, electrical equipment, and in manufacturing in general. Indiana is also considered to have a very friendly business environment, thanks in no small part to low business taxes and prevailing labor laws. It is famous for hosting one of the largest single-day sporting events in the world in the Indy 500 auto racing event, attracting over 250,000 people each year. It is also host to a variety of first-class higher education options that include both state-funded universities and privately run institutes, the latter tending to be affiliated with religious groups.



Situated just northeast of South Bend and consisting of approximately 8000 students, Notre Dame is a private research university whose Catholic heritage is evident in all the architecture around its campus, from the chapels and religious symbols that dot the landscape to the magnificent Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Its undergraduate program is often ranked in the top 20 among national universities. It features one of the largest library systems in the United States and gives students the option of choosing from a variety of majors, from liberals arts related majors to science and engineering, with each having unique benefits. For example, all students majoring in Architecture have the opportunity to study in Rome for a year during their 5 year undergraduate career. Perhaps even more well known are their many high quality sports programs, especially their football program thanks to a number national championships it has accumulated over the years.

Located just a short distance away from Notre Dame, St. Mary’s College is one of the oldest institutes of higher education for women. Having a student body of only around 1600 women, it consistently ranks in the top 100 nationwide for its liberal arts programs at the undergraduate level. It gives its students access to a Co-Exchange program with Notre Dame where the students can take classes at the nearby university. It enjoys a pleasant natural setting along the St. Joseph River and features liberal arts programs studied from a spiritual angle.

With a student body hovering around only 1000 students, Saint Joseph’s is a private Roman Catholic liberal arts school located in Rensselaer. It is nationally recognized for its groundbreaking Core Education program, which features a breadth of study that combines political science, history, natural science, literature, and philosophy into “core” classes. A couple of distinctive features of the campus are the Chapel and the reflecting pond that is in front of that chapel.

Located extremely close to downtown Indianapolis, Butler emphasizes practicality of knowledge above all else. It offers over 60 degree programs to choose from and has plans set in motion for extensive additions and upgrades to the campus so that it can provide state-of-the-art facilities to its students. Because of its favorable location, many internship opportunities are available to its undergraduates. The school also provides numerous research opportunities should its students be interested. It has sports teams that have been fairly successful in NCAA Division I competitions, with their football and basketball teams having amassed numerous awards and accolades.

Located in South Bend, this private evangelical Christian school has a student body of approximately 2100 students and focuses on liberal arts studies. Many students are non-traditional students in the sense that they only take classes on evenings and weekends. The college has recently added such majors as Sign Language, Criminal Justice and Environmental Biology, though all majors still require a broad range of general study. All students are required to take classes in Bible studies and Introductory Theology.

Consisting of only around 1000 students, Wabash College is one of only three remaining mainstream all-male liberal arts colleges in the United States. It has a history of ranking highly academically, even now placing among the top 50 nationally among liberal arts college according to many publications. The school has a generous endowment, being among the top 25 nationally on a per student basis, and because of that it offers a variety of scholarships to its students. The school has an extensive and sophisticated student government that undergraduates have the privilege of being a part of.

Located in Goshen and consisting of only around 1000 students, it is a private Mennonite liberal arts college that offers a wide variety of majors to choose from. Some of the most popular choices for majors include American Sign Language, communication, education, environmental science, nursing, business, and biology. Goshen College offers the unique Student Service Team program, which gives students a chance to study abroad to learn the local language and customs as well as perform community service in accordance with Mennonite religious tradition. All students are expected to fulfill an international education requirement and the Student Service Team program offers an opportunity to do that.
